3D printing news Business Stratasys TrueDent Dental Resin is Firm’s First FDA-Cleared Medical Device

Stratasys has added to their line of dental materials with the release of TrueDent, a clear, realistic dental resin, Stratasys’ first FDA cleared product. It is designed to be used exclusively with the Stratasys J5 DentaJet 3D printer and GrabCAD Print software platform (a 3D printing software company owned by Stratasys). TrueDent will be used for the 3D printing of dental parts, including dentures and temporary crowns and bridges. The dental resin will offer dental labs the opportunity for batch production of monolithic multicolor appliances on a single tray of different parts.

The resin has ultimate flexural strength of ≥85 MPa, far exceeding the necessary minimum of ≥65 MPa. In terms of flexural modulus (meaning the ability of the material to resist tension), it has a value of ≥2300 MPa, with the legal minimum being ≥2000 MPa. The TrueDent resin’s sorption value is ≤ 32 μg/mm^3 (sorption being absorption and adsorption taken as a single measure),  Finally, the solubility of the material is ≤1.1 μg/mm^3, below the legal limit which is 1.6μg/mm^3.

“This new solution will be transformative for the dental industry, and we believe it will help our customers significantly reduce the time and cost of producing dentures and temporaries,” said Ronen Lebi, vice president of dental at Stratasys. “Stratasys continues to push the boundaries of digital dentistry leveraging our portfolio of advanced 3D printing technologies, including hardware, resins, and software to deliver disruptive solutions that make a difference.”

3D printing is important for the dental industry because it offers professionals the chance to produce customized products in a shorter time frame compared to traditional methods such as milling. Services can range from the production of orthodontic appliances like braces, to the production of dentures, crowns and bridges. You may remember previous examples of 3D printing in the industry, for example a study to show the technical advantages in the production of crowns; researchers showed that the 3D printed crowns were more true to the model compared to milling. As well as Stratasys, other major market players include Formlabs with their Form 3B+ (an upgrade on Form 3B).
